COVID-19, A Slaughter from God?

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

When God began killing them, they finally sought him. They repented and took God seriously. Then they remembered that God was their rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer. Psalm 78:34-35 (NLT)

Here in Psalm 78 the Psalmist Asaph gives a brief history of Israel’s journey. Perhaps, under the leadership of Moses until the baton passed on to King David. The LORD God, with His mighty hand, brought the children of Israel from bondage to the land flowing with milk and honey. Yet, the Bible declares they are stiffnecked people always slip away (EX 32:9).

Nevertheless, the LORD God was merciful, performed signs, and wonders while they journeyed through the wilderness. The LORD God brought forth Ten Plagues to the Egyptians and showed His power unto the Pharoah and the children of Israel. He divided the Red Sea, escorted His people through a wall of fire and clouds, split the rocks and quenched their thirst, rained heavenly grains to feed, and brought meat out of the sea to show that I am the Lord who brought you out of Egypt.

Above all, the LORD God ‘established the Law in Israel (V5)’, to show that He loves them as a Father (Deu 1:31). The Law dictated about worship, sanctification, sacrifices, offerings, food, marriage, festivals, etc. and the God of Israel expected only obedience from His people to observe the Law.

Having received all His goodness, the Bible says, ‘Despite all this, they kept on sinning (V32)’. And the text chosen says, ‘God slaughtered the people.’ Immediately, the people RESPONDED to their God by seeking Him, REPENTED by taking God seriously, REMEMBERED that God was their shelter and Redeemer. The medium God used was Death, and He uses even now – COVID-19.

Right now, all over the world, people started Responding, Repenting, Remembering, and confessing my Redeemer Lives! The current situation has brought many to their knees. Churches are awake and praying hard. The fear of God gripped human hearts and drew many near to His presence. Praise God! God has allowed, and God Himself will heal the world.

Let us pray and confess our sins and the sins of our nation to behold the Glory of God. Amen!
