A Meaningful Christmas

The festival of Christmas takes centre stage in December, making it the most wonderful time of the year. The houses and streets are decorated with colourful lights and stars hung around the nooks and corners. People’s hearts would light up with joy when they see the ambience of their homes and cities. However, the ‘True Purpose’ of the celebration is often overlooked because it was not communicated but ignored.

Sin Offering

What was the purpose of Christ coming into this world? The Bible says in Matt 1:21, And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’ The chosen text does not say that Jesus will forgive people from their sins but save. While Jews could obtain forgiveness of sins through sacrifice (temporarily), Jesus could grant forgiveness to all humanity (permanently). That is to put an end to all the sin offerings.

Nevertheless, obtaining permanent forgiveness cannot stop us from sinning. Most people agree with this. Therefore, Jesus’ primary objective was to offer lasting forgiveness and eliminate our sinful nature permanently. Acts 3:19 says, “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” Few versions say “wiped out” or “erased away.” For this very purpose, Christ came not only into the world but also into our lives.

Leading a life without sin is not easy, but it demands a believer to follow Jesus by taking up the ‘Cross Daily’ (Lk 9:23). At the same time, it is also evident that after the resurrection of Christ, apostles and saints of God lived a life without sin (1 Pe 4:1). This journey is not obtained overnight but rather a gradual one that requires commitment and consistency to suffer for the Kingdom that called us.

Metamorphosis (Transformation)

Hence, Christmas is not only about Christ but also has a deep connection to our souls. Yes! Holiness and eternal life (Rom 6:22). Do we still struggle with lies and hypocrisy? With lust, bitterness, hatred, anger, and love for the world? Do we taste victory gradually or become complacent? We use all the resources available to transform our homes and cities, but do we really bother to use the resources given by God to transform our souls?

Therefore, let us celebrate a meaningful Christmas by looking at our lives and striving to mend our shortcomings for a transformed life. Remember, our all-time goal on earth is to identify the existence of Dual Nature in us (2 Co 4:16; Eph 4:22-24) and eradicate the sinful one with the help of Christ and the Holy Spirit, who lives in us. Finally, let us not forget that we worship a God who loves us and means business.

Happy Christmas!
